Hverfjall Crater

Hverfjall Crater Iceland

Hverfjall is one of several tephra craters found near Lake Myvatn in northern Iceland.  It was formed approximately 2500 years ago during an eruption where magma encountered water resulting in steam explosions that broke the lava into the small pieces of tephra that comprise the crater.  The name Hverfjall roughly translates to “hot spring mountain,” a nod to its formation.
